Mike’s father Joe was an accountant. I loved Joe. He was kind, but in an interesting way.

Even behind the pleasantries, you could tell whether or not Joe liked a person — a salesclerk, a woman at a ticket window, a waiter.

When he grew bored, he would quietly retire to his room. Usually with a cat.
