After my article had been skewered by my unsympathetic peer reviewers, I was still determined to figure out why my original argument felt so disingenuous.

Why did my own words make me so uncomfortable?

I knew that I did not want to rest my entire argument on the shaky assumption that films shape reality by molding the attitudes of large segments of a country’s population.
